Designing Foundational Ontologies: The Object-Centered High-Level Reference Ontology OCHRE as a Case Study
نویسنده
چکیده
Foundational ontologies are axiomatic theories about highlevel domain-independent categories of the real world. They constitute toolboxes of eminently reusable information modelling primitives for building application ontologies about specific domains. The design of foundational ontologies confronts the conceptual modeller with completely new challenges in respect of their content as well as their formalisation. As a case study, this article outlines the axiomatisation of the Object-Centered High-level REference ontology OCHRE, comparing its basic conceptual modelling choices with those underlying DOLCE, a foundational ontology developed in the Wonderweb project.

How to Build a Foundational Ontology: The Object-Centered High-level Reference Ontology OCHRE
Foundational ontologies are axiomatic accounts of high-level domain-independent categories about the real world. They constitute toolboxes of reusable information modeling primitives for building application ontologies in specific domains. As such, they enhance semantic interoperability between agents by specifying descriptively adequate shared conceptualisations. The design of foundational ont...

Background and Aim: Ontologies facilitate data integration, exchange, searching and querying. Open Biomedical Ontologies (OBO) Foundry is a solution for creating reference ontologies. In this foundry, the design of ontologies is based on established principles which allow for their interactions as a single system. The purpose of this study is to determine the main features of ontologies develop...
متن کاملA reference ontology for biomedical informatics: the Foundational Model of Anatomy
The Foundational Model of Anatomy (FMA), initially developed as an enhancement of the anatomical content of UMLS, is a domain ontology of the concepts and relationships that pertain to the structural organization of the human body. It encompasses the material objects from the molecular to the macroscopic levels that constitute the body and associates with them non-material entities (spaces, sur...
متن کاملOntology Engineering by Combining Ontology Patterns
Building proper reference ontologies is a hard task. There are a number of methods and tools that traditionally have been used to support this task. These include foundational theories, reuse of domain and core ontologies, development methods, and software tool support. In this context, an approach that has gained increased attention in recent years is the systematic application of ontology pat...
متن کاملDigital library interoperability at high level of abstraction
Digital Library (DL) are the main conduits for accessing our cultural heritage and they have to address the requirements and needs of very diverse memory institutions, namely Libraries, Archives and Museums (LAM). Therefore, the interoperability among the Digital Library System (DLS) which manage the digital resources of these institutions is a key concern in the field. DLS are rooted in two fo...
